Otherwise known as the Poughkeepsie Bridge, the Walkway over the Hudson is a long bridge that connects Poughkeepsie on the east bank of the Hudson River and Highland on the west bank. Built as a double track railroad bridge in 1889, it was damaged by a fire in 1974, after which it earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

The walk from the Walkway to the Mid-Hudson Bridge again is nothing special along a roadway that has virtually no traffic. The Mid-Hudson Bridge is an interesting bridge and has a great view of the Walkway. A short walk back towards the Train Station that has several restaurants nearby for lunch. Total walk of the loop is about 4 miles.

Fast Facts. The bridge now known as the Walkway Over the Hudson opened in 1889 as the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge to transport western raw materials to eastern industrial centers. Rosendale cement was used in the original construction of the piers. At the time of its opening, it was the longest bridge in the world.
