While she enjoyed the beach next to the pier, I did some fishing. There is a fee for entry to the peer, even just to walk. The fishing fee covers the entire day and there is no option for a shorter time. The pier is clean and there is a gift shop/restaurant. Parking on Wrightsville Beach can be very difficult, especially on a summer weekend.
