You don't need to wake to feed at night after they have reached birthweight and provided there are no other issues (if in doubt ask your doctor), but it's likely if you breastfeed you would need to feed every 3 hours during the day until baby is about 4 months old. If you feed less during the day then baby might wake at night to make up the calories!

Most newborns need eight to 12 feedings a day — about one feeding every two to three hours. Look for early signs of readiness to feed, such as moving the hands to the mouth, sucking on fists and fingers, and lip smacking. Fussing and crying are later cues. The sooner you begin each feeding, the less likely you'll need to soothe a frantic baby.

Lactation consultant Karyn-grace Clarke says: “Many newborns will have a day or two of nursing around the clock, and then they tend to fall into a pattern of nursing every two to three hours. But there are huge variations among babies.”

By only feeding baby every 2.5 to 3 hours and then, at those feeds, giving baby full feeds. Newborns will naturally only need to feed every 2.5 to 3 hours if they’re taking full feeds each time. If your baby has a habit of snacking, they will not be the ones to stop it, you’ll have to.

February 2012. DD is almost 7wks and during the days eats on demand 3oz every 3hrs. But at night I have never woke her to eat, trust me when they get hungry they will let you know. Also it does get better, the 1st week was horrible for us and we didn't get any sleep, now we can at least get 4hrs at a time:) Warning.
