Most newborns need eight to 12 feedings a day — about one feeding every two to three hours. Look for early signs of readiness to feed, such as moving the hands to the mouth, sucking on fists and fingers, and lip smacking. Fussing and crying are later cues. The sooner you begin each feeding, the less likely you'll need to soothe a frantic baby.

Lactation consultant Karyn-grace Clarke says: “Many newborns will have a day or two of nursing around the clock, and then they tend to fall into a pattern of nursing every two to three hours. But there are huge variations among babies.”

My baby is 6 weeks old and still feeds 2 hourly in the day, it's tough to rest or get much done! Only good thing is at night she does a 4 hour block has a feed then does a 3 hour block has a feed then is pretty much 2 hourly (3 if I'm lucky) during the day!!!

During the day my LO eats every 2.5 hours and then at night every 3-4. I feed her from 11:00 - 11:30 pm, then again from 3:00 - 3:30 and then up for the day at 7:00 am. During the day I let the times happen when they happen, but the nights work pretty well on this schedule. Baby #2 - BFP 6/13/2014 - EDD 2/17/2015.

At 11 weeks, my son eats every 2-3 hours during the day. However around 7 weeks old, he was able to go 4+ hours at night (sometimes even 8!) Hopefully that's soon for you too!

By only feeding baby every 2.5 to 3 hours and then, at those feeds, giving baby full feeds. Newborns will naturally only need to feed every 2.5 to 3 hours if they’re taking full feeds each time. If your baby has a habit of snacking, they will not be the ones to stop it, you’ll have to.
