Vista takes hours because its shit! I had vista on an old system and nothing would work with it. Even switching to xp mode. So the chances are that you hit the defrag button and it takes 2 hours for the operating system to work out what to do, Another hour for it to find the compatibility program and 5 mins to do the actual work. _____

After four hours the Vista defragmenter was still defragmenting the hard drive. Why is it taking to long? OS is vista ultimate.

Windows defrag is the crappiest you can ever get. Even TuneUp defrag which is an extremely bad form of defrag is better than Windows. And with the average number of fragments above 1.1, Vista will take hours. For me, a some 5 years ago, in XP defrag took about 7 hours with about that much of data and that was when I got Diskeeper.

vista's defrag is none to rapid. I understand from the MVPs out there that vistas defrag is designed to run at scheduled times like 0200 hrs. Perhaps that is MS's justification for the slow motion behaviour of vista's defrag. Others before you have commented (complained) similarly. i'm annoyed with vista defrag. in previous versions, you could 'see' what defrag was doing with the diagramatic representation of blocks or lines, and how far in the process it was with % complete info/progress bar. vista has just one dialog box with "this may take a few minutes to a few hours". no details, no visual representation - no nothing ...
