However, Recorded delivery only provides proof of postage - not proof of receiving it - because no one needs to sign for the item. Used recorded delivery to send a cd back the other day. Hadn't used that service before either. I had completed the envelope already, they gave me a sticker to put my address on which I completed there and then, they weighed it, I paid and it was sorted.

Does the envelope have a big '1' or '2' in the top right hand corner ? If so, then I'd reckon you can only send it as what the envelope dictates. The only way to send mail by recorded delivery is by doing it from a post office (I think?) and they'll soon stop you if you hand it over to them asking for (free) recorded delivery.

yes you can do it, i went to the post office to do this when sending my passport off for a Syrian visa, i put everything inside the [unsealed] envelope to be sent to the Embassy, got it weighed and got 2 recorded delivery stamps issued for that amount, then took out the SAE [with my home address on it] from the unsealed envelope, put one of the rec delivery stamps on it, put it back inside the Embassy …
