What I need to be able to do is pause mail delivery, while postfix is still accepting email from exchange. That way I can let exchange flush out the crap, I can force all of it into the postfix queue, where I can sanitize it before turning postfix delivery processing again.

The active queue becomes saturated with mail that has delivery problems. New mail enters the active queue only when an old message is deferred. This is a slow process that usually requires timing out one or more SMTP connections. All available Postfix delivery agents become occupied trying to connect to unreachable sites etc.

If you are using postfix, there is a mechanism explained here, which I havent tried.. Reconfigure postfix by copying /etc/postfix/main.cf and adding lines:. defer_transports = hold default_transport = hold Beware, you may already have a default_transport.Swap your new file with the real main.cf and restart postfix and send your mails. They will be placed in the hold queue.

Postfix will accept the mail and try to forward it to exchange. If exchange is down (for maintenance or whatever), postfix will keep trying for up to a few days (whatever the default timeout is). There isn't really anything you have to do.
