The current pub opening hours of 11:00 a.m. till 11:00 p.m. (all day drinking) has been with us for about 10 years now. Before that (in England and Wales) it was 11:00 a.m. till 3:00p.m., followed by an afternoon break; then for the evening, it was 6:00 p.m. till 10:30 p.m.

In February, 1916, the Government Control Board (which had powers over much of England and the whole of Wales), reduced opening hours in pubs and clubs to: 12-2.30 pm and 6-9 pm, or 6.30-9.30 pm on Mondays to Saturdays 12.30-2.30 pm and 6-9 pm on Sundays. (Pubs with a 7 day licence could serve bona fide travellers).

"The 1921 Licensing Act allowed pubs to open 8 hours (9 in London) on weekdays, starting no earlier than 11:00 and ending no later than 22:00 (23:00 in London), with a minimum 2-hour break in the afternoon. On Sundays, pubs were only allowed to open for 5 hours. These rules remained little changed until afternoon closing was ended in the 1990's."

When I started going to pubs on the (ahem) day of my 18th birthday in 82 there were open for about 2 hours at lunchtime and from 5.30 to 10.30 weekdays and 11.00 at weekends. Clubs were often open until late, maybe 1 or occasionally 2 am. Food was peanuts, crisps or pork scratchings. You could get bitter, Guinness or Heineken on draft.
