MTP has these limitations because it is designed to be sanely implementable by even devices that are super mega crap (i.e. your camera's firmware). Really, we already have a reasonable solution, and that's to make adb more accessible / a transparent bridge to SFTP. Plenty of tools support transferring files over SFTP and it's Fast Enough.
