Assuming the task is Fixed Duration, Project will spread the entered work evenly across the duration. If your need is to see hours per resource per month, that can be shown without having the divide a long task into different months.

In the Duration column for the task, type the duration in minutes (m), hours (h), days (d), weeks (w), or months (mo). If the new duration is an estimate, type a question mark (?) after it. Press Enter. Be careful about changing a duration by using the Start and Finish columns, especially for linked tasks or automatically scheduled tasks.

So, MS Project will convert Work from Hours (which is in Work field), to Days (mention in pjDays). Finally I will but this custom field on the Gantt Chart: As you can see, in Man Days I’ve got 7,5 days (60 hours of total work / 8 hours per day shown in Hours per Day = 7,5 days). As you can see ProjDurConv is powerful Function and I use it a lot.

To add a column in Project, simply right-click on a column heading and choose Insert Column. Here I have added Work to the Entry table next to Duration. As you can see, Total work is 56 hours (John 16 + Mary 40), and Duration is 10 days, because Mary will work only 4 hours per day (50%), and that means she will need 10 working days to accomplish this Task. With this approach you will get much more precise estimating! Regards!

Project will work in time increments as low as a minute. You need to first change your display to show time. Assuming you are using Project 2010: File > Options, General and select a Date Format that shows time. Using manually scheduled tasks, feel free to enter date and time and with the change in Date format, you'll actually be able to see the time.

This is accomplished by typing the estimated duration in minutes, hours, days, weeks or months into the Duration field: 1m = 1 minute; 1h = 1 hour; 1d = 1 day; 1w = 1 week; and 1mo = 1 month
