Assuming the task is Fixed Duration, Project will spread the entered work evenly across the duration. To add a column in Project, simply right-click on a column heading and choose Insert Column. Here I have added Work to the Entry table next to Duration. So, MS Project will convert Work from Hours (which is in Work field), to Days (mention in pjDays). Finally I will but this custom field on the Gantt Chart: As you can see, in Man Days I’ve got 7,5 days (60 hours of total work / 8 hours per day shown in Hours per Day = 7,5 days). When you enter 5 days, it is calculated as 5 x "Hours by day" as defined in Options. Presumable this is 40hrs. Then project is checking the available working hours defined for this task (if you defined a Task Calendar for this task) or as defined for Project Calendar (Project - Change Working Time). I get the same result by just applying 24hours Calendar for my project:
