Let's say one of the tasks is 'planning' and runs from Oct 2012 to Apr 2013. I know it will only take me about 50hrs of work to complete this task (spread across 6 months) but Project calculates 1016hrs which is the number of hours between 8 Oct 2012 & 31 Mar 2013. To add a column in Project, simply right-click on a column heading and choose Insert Column. Here I have added Work to the Entry table next to Duration. Now if you skip over the Duration, set Work, then assign a resource, Project calculates Duration. Here I typed in 24 hours of work which Project estimated as 3 days’ duration when I assigned Bob.

When estimating project hours, your first step should be to get a good understanding of every task that needs to be performed. Finally you ask your experts in the project for effort estimations.

Estimated Hours – the amount of time you think it’s going to take someone to complete a task or a project. Actual Hours – the real amount of time it took to finish that task or project. Estimated Hours vs. Estimated Duration Keep in mind that Estimated and Actual hours should not be confused with Estimated or Actual Duration.
