Re: Vivado ERROR: [Common 17-179] Fork failed: Cannot allocate memory I'm running a virtual machine and have 2.9GB out of 4GB used. Also, for a memory error, it'd need to use up RAM AND swap space, both of which are aplenty.

R essentially needs to create a copy of everything that's in memory for each individual process (to my knowledge it doesn't utilize shared memory). If you are already using 51% of your RAM with a single process, then you don't have enough memory to create a second process since that would required 102% of your RAM in total.

If you received error=12, Cannot allocate memory or error=12, Not enough space, this means your system ran out of memory or swap space when Java tried to fork a process. The problem is inherent with the way Java allocates memory when executing processes. When Java executes a process, it must fork() then exec().

AFAIK the kernel has to promise memory to processes if it's allocated, even if they're never going to use it. This includes the copy-on-write memory regions fork()ed from the postmaster. So even though the memory is free in the sense of not currently being mapped into a process…

fork: Cannot allocate memory when running commands over ssh. I have 4 GB of RAM and usually 2 GB free. This started happening since I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10. I then need to repeatably run the command until it finishes successfully. I'm connecting from my laptop to my server both from my home LAN. Some times happens even when I run apt-get.

I have a 64-bit server running linux 3.x that reports "bash: fork: cannot allocate memory". This server has plenty of RAM (64G) and swap (128G) and I cannot see a particular process being the culript (no apparent memory leak). I was not limited by "ulimit" as nothing was running under this shell, and the problem also existed as root.
