You get one free cancellation per calendar year of a listing that has bidders. After that you'll pay the FVF on the highest bid showing at the time you cancel. From ebay help: "You can't end a listing less than 12 hours before the end of the listing if the item has a winning bid: You may cancel bids, but not end the item unless you are selling the item to the high bidder."

If there's less than 12 hours to go, eBay allegedly make it harder to end the auction - but the practice clearly still goes on. So what I've 'gleaned' from all this - is that there isn't a definitive answer!!

Ending auctions early. In the past, I seem to remember that Ebay would not let you end an auction if there was less than 12 hours to go; but, I guess that's no longer the rule. Today, I found something I wanted, with roughly 4 hours to go, and no bids.
