When it encounters a local delivery during a queue run, Exim checks its retry database to see if there has been a previous temporary delivery failure for the address before running the local transport. If there was a previous failure, Exim does not attempt a new delivery until the retry time for the address is reached.

Jun 14, 2006 · I had read that thread earlier today and updated Exim as you suggested. There haven't been any more of these emails bounced to the queue. Having said that, it's after hours now, so I'll have to wait for business hours tomorrow to verify that this has fixed it.

You need to define a router for your gateway, another router for local delivery, and the conditions under which they are used. So, to locally deliver mail addressed to the *.localhost suffix, define the domainlist local_domains that includes "localhost", and include a domains clause in the first router. Exim checks the domains clause to decide if the router should be used.
