Requiring authentication for an Exchange 2010 distribution group won't prevent any authenticated senders from sending to it, for example all of the mailbox users in your organization will still be able to send. In some organizations it is desirable to restrict certain distribution groups to only certain senders.

Sep 19, 2012 · Exchange 2010 allows you to restrict who can send a message to a distribution group. If you open the group from within the Exchange Management Console, go to the Mail Flow Settings tab and open the Message Delivery Restrictions property. From here you can add one or more specific users who you want to allow to send to this distribution group.

Sep 27, 2016 · I'm on Exchange 2010, and we have some distribution groups with mail delivery restrictions set to "require that all senders are authenticated". According to my understanding of that option, people outside of our domain should not now be able to send email to that distribution group's address.
