When you enter 5 days, it is calculated as 5 x "Hours by day" as defined in Options. Presumable this is 40hrs. Then project is checking the available working hours defined for this task (if you defined a Task Calendar for this task) or as defined for Project Calendar (Project - Change Working Time). Project will work in time increments as low as a minute. You need to first change your display to show time. Assuming you are using Project 2010: File > Options, General and select a Date Format that shows time. Using manually scheduled tasks, feel free to enter date and time and with the change in Date format, you'll actually be able to see the time.
