When you enter 5 days, it is calculated as 5 x "Hours by day" as defined in Options. Presumable this is 40hrs. Project will work in time increments as low as a minute. You need to first change your display to show time. Assuming you are using Project 2010: File > Options, General and select a Date Format that shows time.
