The second message is about failing to connect to mail.protonmail.ch which is the server indicated by the primary MX record for protonmail.com.That would be the next hop on the mail's path to the destination.

I still do not understand why, but creating a linux user on my Ubuntu VPS named "noreply" fixed this issue. I am happy it works, but would appreciate an answer from anyone who might have insight or an alternative solution other than creating new linux users for every email id I want to send from.

1) It looks like it. Also if I try to send mail to myself it works, but it doesn't work when trying to sendmail to an external host. If I try to send mail to myself with the PHP mail command it works but takes a few minutes for a 1 sentence email.
