Visiting Yerkes Observatory: General Information. Free Saturday Tours Throughout the Year. Yerkes Observatory is open for free public tours every Saturday throughout the year, except on December 25 and January 1. Programs begin at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and Noon and last about forty-five minutes. We don't take reservations.

Tours conducted by expert guides last about an hour and include a description of history, architecture, science, astronomy and the Great Refractor. The exterior is worth the visit alone, as it's encrusted with stone and terra cotta ornament relating to astronomy, the University of Chicago (owner), etc. But, on Saturday mornings (10, 11, and noon), there are guided tours by astronomers that really make sense of the building's history and function.
