In windows: Check the settings for the network adapter and make sure "wake on magic packet" is enabled. When you shut down your computer it also matter if it is shutting down in S3 (sleep mode), S4 (hibernate) or S5 (soft power off mode). According to Microsoft WoL only works with S3 or S4.

Wake On LAN stops working after a few hours Hi! So I've now past a few days configured WOL and got it working perfectly, even over the internet with port forwarding, but now I noticed that after a night of sleep the computer doesn't start anymore, at least not via 4G and the external router IP Address, and instantly when I start the computer ...

This eliminates the need to store static ARP entries in your router/switch's ARP table. Note, you do not want to use the ip helper-address directive (unless you need to) because it is limited to forwarding a few common udp protocols like NTP, NetBIOS, etc. Wake-on-LAN is not one of them.

There has to be a green setting or bug or something that turns off the NIC after a few hours. It's really frustrating as I travel for work and really want this feature to work.

There's lots of threads on WOL, I know, but none where it works perfectly for 10 minutes then stops working for no reason. A few threads mention problems with WOL after 12.04 was installed. My only remaining idea right now is to install Ubuntu 10. But that would just be a test, not a permanent solution, and a very time consuming test.

First the same issue that came up when Windows 8 rolled around. Its special pseudo-hybernate shutdown mode. You have to turn that off if you want WOL to work. This is done in Windows under Power Management (Choose what Power Buttons do selection) and uncheck "Quick Boot".
