Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site, a Texas Historical Commission property, is situated on 66 acres along the Brazos River, 50 miles south of Houston in Brazoria County. The site was donated to the state in 1957 by Miss Ima Hogg, daughter of Texas Gov. James S. Hogg, and dedicated and opened on March 24, 1958.

I never even knew this place existed until my husband and I were planning to spend the day at Brazos Bend and I went on that website and found Varner-Hogg listed under nearby attractions.

Varner-Hogg Plantation’s history began in 1824 when Virginia native Martin Varner became one of 297 grantees who purchased 307 parcels of land from Stephen F. Austin and established a colony in present-day Brazoria County. In 1834, Martin Varner sold the property to Columbus R. Patton of Kentucky.The plantation sustained major damage in the 1900 hurricane.
