The metro runs right from the airport to the edge of the Old Town. It is an extensive and efficient network. I bought the Valencia Card at the airport which gave me unlimited travel, so got to see some lovely little towns some 10km away from the city. Card not really worth it just for the miserly reductions it offers to the main attractions.
