Woodworking/Carpentry is a hobby, but as a college student I don't really have the money for the bigger tools. I know UIUC has a wood shop with bandsaws, planars, etc. and it's supposed to be accessible to students as long as you take a safety orientation.

They have walk in hours from 1 to 4pm on weekdays. At the Architecture Annex (Woodshop) you can pay to use the CNC machine ( http://arch.illinois.edu/degrees/fabrication) $25/hr for a student. To use the lathe in the woodshop you will need to go through woodshop training (they have tiers, and the lathe is tier 2).
