I think people enjoy complaining about the Bird Coop (Gym near the UBC rec centre) because it's "always" packed, but that really is not the case. During the start of the semester it is usually busy, but that slows down fairly quickly to just peak hours, ie noon-2, 5-7 or 8, and even then it depends on what you are doing.
