For example: 6 year old tractor with 1900 engine hours. 1900 hours / 6 years = 316 hours per year; 316 hours / 52 weeks = 6 hours per week; You can make your own assumption as to whether you think 6 hours per week on a tractor is a lot or not. For a small sub compact tractor it could be, for a larger utility tractor, it probably isn’t.

What is the average hours for a tractor? Tractors that have been well maintained average about 8,000 to 10,000 engine hours before requiring more unscheduled maintenance. Compact tractors with diesel engines average 6,000 to 8,000 hours, while gas engine tractors average 6,000 to 8,000 as well.

On compact tractors the hours are a little misleading, one engine hour is only an actual hour on most compacts when the engine is at PTO RPM which is around 2,200 to 2,400 RPM. I do a lot of work in 1,500 to 1,800 RPM range which takes almost 2 actual hours to record one engine hour. That is probably why 4000 hours on a compact tractor is a lot.

For a used tractor, overall condition is more/just as important than hours. Having said that and considering engines in general, I would venture that anything over 5000 hours on a gasoline engine may be considered high and might need an overhaul. OTOH it may already have had an overhaul and will be good for many more thousand hours.

It depends on the tractor and what it's used for. If it's a chore tractor, it wouldn't be uncommon for it to be used 1000-1200 hours a year or more. If it's a field tractor, it could be run 12-14 hours a day, but only 50 days a year. There are areas of the country where the farm around the clock - one guy gets out and another gets in.
