The secret sauce my husband and I used to have our boys sleeping through the night for 10 hours straight by 10 weeks old is quite simple, but putting in the work is hard. First 6 weeks = survival For the first 6 weeks of life, I focused on making sure baby was eating enough and figured out anything like acid reflux or colic .

answers from Dallas on June 04, 2009. The goal is for them to sleep 10-12 hours at night, usually closer to 12 is best! They are little and growing so quickly they need all that sleep!! At 3 months mine was sleeping 12 hours every night with two 2 hour naps and 1 catnap in the evening... so no need to worry!!

Most infants, when going through a growth spurt (usually around the ages of 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 4-6 weeks, 3 months, and 4 months), will nurse or want a bottle more often, and may even sleep less throughout the day. But most babies will sleep noticeably more (overall) during these growth periods because of the intense need to conserve energy.

If the baby sleeps longer than 6-7 hours at night, mom’s prolactin level goes down. Prolactin is the hormone that urges that breasts to keep producing milk. If the baby goes a long period without nursing, such as 8-10 hours, not only might her milk supply go down, but her menses may come back, further lowering her milk supply, and increasing her chances of pregnancy.
