my 3 mo. old does the same thing. she has been an EXTREMELY fussy baby since 5 1/2 weeks. she was sleeping 6 1/2 -7 1/2 hours at night for about a week, 2 weeks ago, then all of a sudden, she started waking 4 hours in, then 3 hours. then it was every 3 hours, and extremely difficult to get her to go back to sleep without holding her.

What many moms don’t realize is that this *can* change dramatically around the 3-4 month mark. Babies who used to feed every 1 to 3 hours, for 30 minutes or more, babies who were always happy to breastfeed when offered - suddenly start refusing the breast at times, and when they do accept, may only feed for a few minutes before pulling off.

Many mothers have been told “your baby should nurse eight to 12 times a day” – or every two to three hours – and they start to get worried if the baby wants to nurse more often than that. They worry that: They don’t have enough milk. The baby is “snacking” and developing bad habits. The baby is using them for a pacifier. Their milk is poor quality.

Lactation consultant Karyn-grace Clarke says: “Many newborns will have a day or two of nursing around the clock, and then they tend to fall into a pattern of nursing every two to three hours.

Still nursing every two hours is still pretty normal at that age unfortunately. Some get longer stretches by that age but many don't. You're not doing anything wrong. You can absolutely do formula before bed to try and get a longer stretch but it may not buy you much at this age since their sleep is so crappy at four months anyway.

Mine fed every 2hrs round the clock until 11 months. She then started spacing to 3-3.5hrs and now at 12.5months she nurses at 7:30pm, 2am and 6am most nights...then about 2x during day. I feed on demand, she just demands less, all on her own doing. Report Reply LisaLisa1980 member March 2014 I'm still feeding my 11 month old every 2-3 hrs.

Nursing every two hours is very normal for babies fed on demand. I've attended many LLL meetings and spoken to many mothers over the years. There is a wide range of normal. As long as it works for both of you I wouldn't be concerned. My son actually nursed more often than that up until about 14 months when he cut back during the day.

I'm not sure what to do. My 3 month old still nurses every hour or hour and a half. She only eats for about 8-10 min and then pulls off or falls asleep. I try to wake her up or get her to take it again but it doesn't work. She does sleep 7-8 hours at night so I'm not …
