2 hours before sunset is a good time to go. The trail is about 4miles loop from the Stanford gate. The path starts out rather steep and it is definitely quite a hike up to the dish. From the dish, you can choose to turn around go and back the way you came from (shorter hike) or do the entire loop which is another 2+ miles.

Stanford Dish is a popular place for walking and jogging -- which is why the very limited parking makes it so very difficult to actually be able to walk there if you don't happen to live in the nearby residences -- and gives a chance to see and feel Mother Nature over the course of the 3.5 mile paved circuit road that functions as footpath (and occasionally service road for the dish).
