Firstly - its a shame that you dont getto actually go onto the barrier but its clear why this isnt possible - how would you get there! Its slightly off the beaten track so make sure you follow signs carefully and dont worry if you think you are heading towards an industrial estate - you're in the right area!

The Thames Barrier Park (the opposite side of the river to the Visitor Centre), is a good alternative when the Visitor centre isn't open - great views (better, apparently than from the Visitor Centre), easy to access on the DLR and a nice friendly cafe with more regular opening hours.
