Continental Motors Extends TBOs up to 400 Hours April 9, 2013 – (Mobile, AL) – Continental Motors, Inc. announces TBO increases up to 400 hours on Gold Standard Factory produced engines. The majority of engine models manufactured after February 2012 will see TBOs increase by 200 hours with frequent flyers receiving up to 400 hours.

The TBO’s in the chart do not apply to engines engaged in crop dusting or other chemical-application flying. These engines should be overhauled at 1500-hour intervals or at recommended TBO, whichever is lower. Reliability and average service life cannot be predicted when an engine has undergone any modification not approved by Lycoming.

This TBO recommendation should in no way be considered a maximum TBO limit as it is possible to safely operate an R-1340 & R-985 past 1200 or 1400 hours TSO. It is merely a RECOMMENDATION that, hopefully, will better enable an operator to develop a safe, economic engine overhaul schedule.

Correct - the TBO on those Lycomings is 2,000 hours. It's likely a misprint, or they're referring to how many hours they went between overhaul. O-360s can go well past TBO, especially if run regularly (i.e. in a flight school environment).

Many times, pilots know their propeller’s published TBO period based on flight hours, but ignore the calendar limit. This could be a major safety concern, especially for general aviation pilots who fly fewer than 100 hours per year. For example, say the overhaul limit for a propeller is 2,000 flight hours or 60 months (5 years).
