When I decided to take five on-campus and two online classes, I knew what I was getting myself into. Why I Decided to Take 22 Credit Hours This Semester. After a yearlong leave of absence during the 2015-2016 academic year, I came back to campus feeling motivated to do well both academically and socially. I spent my leave of absence interning and volunteering in Houston, focusing much of my time on my spiritual and emotional growth.

22 credit hours is nuts, man. You’re gonna drive yourself crazy and to the point of exhaustion with that much work. Chem & Lab- 5 Hours. Nutrition- 3 Hours. Psychology- 3 Hours. History Course- 3 Hours. English- 3 Hours. These classes I indefinitely need to be taking as they are pre-reqs (I'm a freshman currently). I wanted to take a CNA course at a community college 30 minutes away which will be an additional 5 hours, totally 22.

If you choose to take the 22 credits, be mindful that your amount of "free" or downtime may be greatly reduced, which can be quite jarring for people as they transition into college. Then again, some college students are more successful when their time is more structured.

Scenario: It’s the first semester of your freshmen year and you’ll be taking 12 credit hours. Given what we learned above, 12 credit hours is the same as 180 contact hours (12 credit hours * 15 contact hours per credit hour). Determining Credit Hours in an Online Course. In a face-to-face course, credit hours are generally based on the hours per week the students spend in the classroom or lab, or “contact hours” with the students. A course that meets for three 50-minute periods per week during a full 15-week semester is considered 3 credit hours.
