If you are staying in Taiping for a night (the Lake Gardens are also quite worth a visit) then you can either take a bus or train. If you're coming for a day trip, a car would probably be the best option. I've driven many times and it takes about 100 minutes to reach Georgetown, Penang from Taiping zoo area.
