The hours indication is really the run time of the tach. If it has always been paired with the engine then it will be the engine hours as well. When it reaches 500 hours, one of the trouble lights flashes once, representing 500 hours, and the needle swing will start over counting the additional hours until you hit 1000.

On the DF 140, it is read by the tach meter when you turn the key on and the rev limit lamp flashing. less than 50 hrs no tach indication or lamp. 50 - 500 rpm. 60 - 600 rpm. 540 hrs - 5400 rpm. 550 hrs - 500 rpm, 1 blink on rev limit. 560 hrs - 600 rpm, 1 blink. 1040 hrs, 5400 rpm, 1 blink.
