The funicular wasn't operating when we were there, and apparently keeps odd hours (those in need should probably call ahead). About the only negative I can muster about Strands is that it's a long, steep stairway down and a long, steep stairway back up, but in neither case was it awful, and the exertion was totally worth it.

My husband and strolled the Strands Beach while visiting Dana Point, enjoying the quiet beach while viewing the lovely homes lined on the hillside. The parking is free and plentiful at this beach. There is also a funicular that wasn't functioning the day we were there. So we climb back up the steps is quite a workout!
