Been to Spencer, ID many times over the years. Never been out to the mines because my rock hounding days are behind me. It’s a great place to find beautiful opal jewelry, cabochons, triplets. Every time we stop it’s different because some shops are open and others will be closed.

Some things to keep in mind when you head out to Spencer Opal Mines: Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for kids to dig. This fee will allow you to take 1 lb of rock. In 1948 the Spencer opal mine in Idaho was accidentally discovered by deer hunters and also named “the lost deer hunters mine”. Perhaps the most significant discovery was by a mining engineer Marsden Nanson who discovered opal in Virgin Valley, Humboldt County, Northern Nevada in 1905, and the Opal Queen mine was born.
