terra provides methods to manipulate geographic (spatial) data in "raster" and "vector" form. Raster data divide space into rectangular cells (pixels) and they are commonly used to represent spatially continuous phenomena, such as elevation or the weather. Satellite images also have this data structure. In contrast, "vector" spatial data (points, lines, polygons) are typically used to ...

NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) can be found onboard the Terra and Aqua satellites launched on December/1999 and May/2002, respectively. Together, they provide sub-daily global observations around 10:30am/pm and 1:30am/pm local time.

The Terra satellite was launched on December 18, 1999 and the Aqua on May 4, 2002. It has a viewing swath width of 2,330 km and views the entire surface of the Earth every one to two days. Its detectors measure 36 spectral bands and it acquires data at three spatial resolutions: 250 m, 500 m, and 1,000 m.

The Terra satellite records Chongqing and its surroundings at 10:30 and the Aqua satellite at 13:30 in the LTZ. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), which is sensitive to heat and has a total of 36 bands, is an important sensor onboard the satellites.

terra replaces the raster package. The interfaces of terra and raster are similar, but terra is simpler, faster and can do more. Installation. terra is available from CRAN, so you can use install.packages("terra") to get the current released version.
