To claim Working Tax Credit as a single parent, you need to work at least 16 hours a week. The maximum amount you can earn and still qualify depends on your circumstances. If you're entitled to Working Tax Credit, you'll receive up to £1,960 per year (the 'basic' element), and up to £2,010 on top of that as a single parent.

Working tax credit can be paid to single parents who work 16 hours a week or more. You can be paid an extra amount if you work 30 hours a week or more. This is called the 30-hour element. What if I am off work temporarily? There are situations when you can still get working tax credits when you’re not actually going to work, for example:

I am a single parent currently working 16 hours (for minimum wage) I get some housing and council tax benefit along with child tax & working tax credit, I've just been offered another 12 hours p/w taking me upto 28 hours p/w.

Lone parents are generally better off working 16 hours or more a week, in fact i thought you had to be trying to do at least 16 hours a week once your child is at school ( could be wrong there ). It's not a lot of hours really especially if it's a term time job. Working more than 16 hours means you can come off Income support.

What you can claim depends on a range of circumstances. At the moment if you work below 16 hours per week, and don't have savings in excess of £16000, you can claim some Income Support (IS). This will change in April 2011 where the maximum age of the child for IS on lone parents grounds reduces to age 5. At this point, you'd transfer to JSA.

I think for a single parent working the best hours are 16-24 as you get working tax credit (which is the same as IS or JSA give or take a few quid) you still get your child tax credits. You do still get HB and CTB but have some deducted cos of working but im sure you still work out better off rather than going to work for 10 hours for 20quid xxx
