2 reviews of SEGS coin grading company "Very high quality slabs that also detail the coin type and grade from the top edge! These days usually their grading leans towards the conservative side but it was not this way towards their beginnings. Their grading is fairly accurate but there are times I disagree with their assessment but such a result could always be resubmitted for reevaluation.

This combination of features allows effortless cataloguing and retrieval of any “particular” coin. The SEGS capsule eliminates the hours spent trying to locate any “specific” coin. I was researching an auctions listing before it started and found in the first few coins a 1890-O Morgan graded MS-66 by SEGS. I researched the coin in the Redbook and the CDN and found both prices well over $5K for the grade. This was the first time I had ever seen a coin in a SEGS holder, so I researched the company as well.

jobiwan115 Posts: 774. June 21, 2007 1:39PM. I have only one SEGS coin, a 1938-D Buff with some really nice toning, they graded it a 66. I stick with PCGS and NGC since I learned my lesson on some of those "other graders", but I like the look of this one, and what I paid for it ($46).

Distinctions Between PCGS and NGC. While ICG, SEGS, and ANACS are clearly popular coin grading services, along with older PCI coins, the two heavyweights in the third-party coin grading arena are, without any doubt, PCGS and NGC. Both got their start in the mid 1980s and quickly rose to prominence in the coin industry.

The lesson here is not to overlook coins in holders by reputable if not first-tier grading companies, including PCI, ICG, ANACS, ACG and SEGS. Inspect the coin, not the holder; and if you don’t like the holder, take your chances crossing over. Learn to grade so that you can spot bargains, too. I highly recommend becoming familiar with PCGS ...

I beg to differ. SEGS has many of the top Variety Specialist doing the variety coins, Jeff Oxman on VAM silver dollars, J.T. Stanton on Cherrypicker coins, their guarantee is the same as PCGS, NGC or ANACS. Now as to grading? Maybe they don't hold the same candle as PCGS or NGC in the number of coins graded. And I will agree over all their grading can be iffy in more instances than I find …

The SEGS coin was priced at $6,000; the PCGS coin was valued at $20,000. The only difference I could see between the two was an almost imperceptible mark on the SEGS coin that didn't really disqualify it from the assigned grade. Clearly given the price difference, I thought that the SEGS coin was the better buy.

SGS Star Grading Service Third Party Coin Grading Service. This company is notorious for over-grading coins. It appears most modern coins are always MS69 or MS70 in their holders, and is not a recommended grading service. ABON ebay seller sales these slabs and is rumored to be the owner and grader of this company.
