The Liturgy of the hours took me around an hour to do. The Latin Breviary is still taking around 2 1/2 hours. Many many times I have been tempted to return to the Liturgy of the Hours to save time. But by God’s grace I have persevered. In one week you pray all 150 psalms. In the new liturgy of the hours you do them in a four week cycle.

I've been experimenting with the Breviarium Romanum (in it's Romano-Seraphicum edition) over the past few weeks, and now I'm prepared to say which I think is better, this old version or the Novus Ordo Liturgy of the Hours. Matins/Office of Readings. The Liturgy of the Hours (LH) has fewer but longer readings. The structure is much simpler than the Matins of the Breviarium Romanum (BR.)

The Roman breviary (pre- and post-Tridentine) considers first vespers of Septuagesima to be still of the post-Epiphany season, rather than the pre-Lent season, and thus includes an Alleluya. In ths Sarum Use first vespers of Septuagesima is of the pre-Lent season, with no Alleluya.

What was essentially wrong with the Traditional Roman Breviary that it had to be virtually tossed in the dustbin? If anyone has read on this extensively and can support the changes, I'd really love hear them. Why couldn't parish priests be allowed an abbreviated breviary, something like the Little Hours, if it was so onerous? Love the discussion.
