2 reviews of Roads End Permit Station "One of the best spots to start a High Sierra hike, easy 1.5hr drive from Fresno, right at the end of the road (no pun intended, it's rather aptly named). Ample parking, two pit toilets, and fresh drinking water to fill bottles. One of the main starting spots for doing the Big SEKI Loop, I believe they also have bear canister rentals (call ahead to …

Road’s End, a lone wilderness permit issuing station 6 miles east of Cedar Grove. These trailheads are both on the High Sierra’s western side and are separated by one intersection and a 2-hour drive on two-lane, paved, winding mountain highways. It’s also a 2-hour drive to each trailhead from the nearest city and airport, Fresno.

a credit card (760-873-2483), or you can reserve permits by mail. If you want your permit left in a night drop box, call that same number between 8-10 am one or two days before your trip. After 10am they will be busy issuing permits (which are only reserved from 10am to 4pm). Most locations allow free walk-up permits the day before you hike in.

Fresno to Road's End is *much* faster, but even that is probably about 2 1/2 hrs each way, so finding a Uber driver with 5 hours to kill might be tough (I've never tried). If you took public transport to Giant Forest hitching to Road's end that same day could be tough as most people head down there early in the day.
