Riel lived here for a bit, before he went off and started his 2nd uprising (Northwest Rebellion). He did return here in a casket after his hanging. Parking is available in a small lot by the house, but this is fenced off in the winter.

The house was acquired by Parks Canada in 1969 and is now available to visit from July 1 to September 1. I think it is a good idea to visit the Riel House as a complement to the many other sites connected with Louis Riel Life in the Winnipeg French quarter (probably the most interesting will be the St Boniface Museum).

Riel House | Trails of 1885. This restored Red River frame building was Louis Riel’s family home, where his descendants lived until 1969. After Louis Riel’s trial in Regina, Saskatchewan and his hanging, he was returned to his family’s home where he lay in state in December 1885 until his burial in the St. Boniface Cathedral cemetery.
