The Hours movie review & film summary (2002) Roger Ebert

Dec 27, 2002 · "The Hours," directed by Stephen Daldry and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Michael Cunningham, doesn't try to force these three stories to parallel one another. It's more like a meditation on separate episodes linked by a certain sensibility--that of Woolf, a great novelist who wrote a little book titled A Room of One's Own that in some ways initiated modern feminism.

'The Hours' is, obviously, a movie made for a specialized audience, one not easily scared off by a film with powerful themes and complex characters. In this epic of angst, three superb actresses end up taking us on a journey deep into the darkest recesses of the human soul - a journey that would be pretty much unbearable if they themselves were not there to guide us through it.

The Hours is a serious and moving film, one that achieves many of its goals; among other things, it will presumably have many, many more people reading Mrs. Dalloway than Woolf could ever have ...

THE HOURS - Movieguide Movie Reviews for Christians

THE HOURS is a movie that follows the lives of three different groups of people in parallel. The first group lives in 1923. The movie introduces viewers to Virginia Woolf, the famous English writer who wrote such notable books as TO THE LIGHTHOUSE, ORLANDO and A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN, well played by a dumpified Nichole Kidman. Mrs. Woolf is going insane.Estimated Reading Time: 6 mins

Review: The Hours - Slant Magazine

    https://www.slantmagazine.com/film/the-hours/
Dec 17, 2002 · S tephen Daldry’s The Hours treats Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) as a lesbian high priestess of our known universe, a literati Joan of Arc who dies so that a modern Saphic generation could reign supreme. United across the space-time continuum via Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and Daldry’s oh-so-cute graphic matches, the women of The Hours become little more than sudsy abstractions of cross-generational female repression.1.5/4

Aug 15, 2020 · The Hours is a great and heartbreaking movie. Full of great dialogue, great performances and difficult themes, it is an emotional, sometimes heartbreaking film. But as much as the subject matter itself may be bleak, the film offers a sense of beauty even in difficulty.Estimated Reading Time: 3 mins
