It isn't a myth, until probably the 1980s/90s it was routine for law enforcement to wait 24 hrs before taking a Missing Persons report. The reason being, statistically most missing people show up within 24 hrs. Also, if an adult wants to disappear, that's their prerogative absent any sign of duress.
