If the refrigerator door was slightly open for a few hours or overnight, the unit was operating and the temperature stayed at 40 °F or below, then all the food would be safe to use. If you can't tell what the temperature is in the refrigerator and the food feels warm, discard perishable items as you would in a power outage.

If the door was only open a small amount, but the refrigerator was still running, it is likely things remained cold enough. However, there is no way for me to know for sure. Temperature is the key. If the interior remained below 40 degrees F, your food is fine. If it crept up into the danger zone for more than 2 hours, then you should be concerned.

Help! r. Raedia. |. Jul 21, 2005 12:03 PM 7. Last night, in my rush to get to bed, I accidentally left the fridge door open about 3 inches. I didn't discover this until 7 hours later, unfortunately! So my question is: what do I need to chuck, and what's probably still okay?

Best Answer. The grocery stores do this all the time. They have refrigerator & Freezer bins that have no doors on them and yet the food stays perfectly safe. There is probably going to surge in your electric bill for that time frame, but I don't see a problem w/ your food being safe.

More than likely the food in your refrigerator will be fine if it’s only been a couple of hours and the door is open just a bit. If your refrigerator has a temperature control, turn it to the highest setting for an hour or two, with the refrigerator door closed of course.

Leaving the door open does NOT create a leak as it would leak from the pipe & NOT an open door. With the door open, it should mean that the refrigerator was constantly running trying to maintain the temperature you have preset. Your food might not have been as cold as it normally would have been; but 2 hours should not have caused it to spoil.
