I think Xartep is right, so for example, Cambridge might have RD1, out to the north, RD2 out to the east, RD3 to the west etc. How many runs an area has depends on how large the rural area is. However, sending out books and calendars to you people shows that some people have really weird addresses, which don't seem to fit this theory.
