My husband and I spent 7 hours on the Hilo side of the Big Island during our honeymoon (cruise) and the Punaluu Black Sand Beach was the last thing we did that day before heading back to the ship. It was about an hour drive from the Hilo area but it was totally worth it.

Lifeguards are present at the beach every day of the week between between 08:30 am and 5:00 pm. You can find space for parking, a picnic area and restroom facilities at the beach, as well as an outdoor shower in the beach area. Punaluʻu is a good place for swimming, taking in the sun and snorkeling (turtles!)

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is one of those iconic places to visit in Hawaii to see a black sand beach. The black "sand" of course is granular lava. But the real attraction is the group of sea turtles which rest on this beach. It is fascinating to watch them come ashore and then chill out in their penned off areas.
