theres an easier and quicker way. 1. remove hdd. 2. plug back in hdd and restart..3. your ps3 should peform a QUICK format. dunno why but you can remove and plug back in a hdd even if its been out for just a few seconds with out having to format it again.

Ha, it took me 39 hours and 31 min to back up my 1tb hdd with 430gb of data and 31 hours and 16min to reinstall that data in my 2tb hdd. Take what you can get. Sony wasn't smart about the ps3 file system at all. That's pretty normal... It's not the PS3 file system but rather the USB 2.0 speed.
