In Project, the default task duration unit is days, but you can change it to be minutes, hours, weeks, or months: Choose File > Options. In the Project Options dialog box, choose Schedule. Under Scheduling options for this project, in the Duration is entered in list, select a duration unit.

In the Duration column for the task, type the duration in minutes (m), hours (h), days (d), weeks (w), or months (mo). If the new duration is an estimate, type a question mark (?) after it. Press Enter. Be careful about changing a duration by using the Start and Finish columns, especially for linked tasks or automatically scheduled tasks.

Suppose that I have a simple Project with one Task, and it’s Duration is 5 days: I want to see Duration in hours as well. So, in my example I should see 40 hours because my Project is set up like: and: and: So 5 days are 5 * 8 = 40 hours. To show this 40 hours I will use custom field with ProjDurConv function (follow this example step by step): then:

This is accomplished by typing the estimated duration in minutes, hours, days, weeks or months into the Duration field: 1m = 1 minute; 1h = 1 hour; 1d = 1 day; 1w = 1 week; and; 1mo = 1 month; In Project, duration is a measure of working time, not sequential or calendar time. This means a week is five days.

Because Microsoft Project measures elapsed days as 24 hour days, this means that if you assign a human resource to a task with an elapsed Duration value, the software assigns the human to work 24 hours/day, even though the resource’s calendar shows that they only work 8 hours/day.

When you enter 5 days, it is calculated as 5 x "Hours by day" as defined in Options. Presumable this is 40hrs. Then project is checking the available working hours defined for this task (if you defined a Task Calendar for this task) or as defined for Project Calendar (Project - Change Working Time). I get the same result by just applying 24hours Calendar for my project:
