Post doc here and the only time I've ever worked more than 40 hours in a week were the last two weeks of my PhD, which involved me basically telling my supervisor no to unreasonable requests. I work with people who put in 60-70 hour weeks every week. I also recently dropped to a 4 day week (health reasons).
